Meet Our Staff
Staff for Summer 2017
Nick & Jean Fleming – Program Specialists
Hi! We are Nick, Jean, and Watson. This summer Nick will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of his first Bar 717 ranch project, first trip to the Trinity alps, and first snuggle with a baby goat. Jean will be celebrating the 20th Anniversary of her first Camp overnight, swim at the swim hole, and silkscreen of the moon rise over totem pole hill. Over those years we have done many different jobs at camp, but this year you will be able to find us doing special ranch projects and helping out all over the ranch. We cant wait to spend another wonderful summer with you all!
Naoise Doherty – Barn Director
Hi everyone! My name is Naoise, and I am so excited to be returning to the beautiful Bar 717 this summer. This will be my third year working on the ranch. I have spent the last two years since studying for my Masters in Museum Studies, graduating from said Masters, working in a health food store, and generally rambling around my home-town of Cork, Ireland! However, after two years of staying put I am definitely ready for an adventure. So here’s to another summer of looking after the horses, climbing gates, singing (badly) at camp-fires, and spending time with all the wonderful campers!
Counseling Staff for Summer 2017
Why hello everyone!!! I am beyond thrilled to work a second summer at Bar 717. After finally being back on the ranch last year after an 8 year hiatus, I realized I couldn’t imagine not returning to camp again this summer.
Hi everyone! My name is Paige and I’m from Palo Alto, California. I was a camper for 7 years and I’m so excited to have the opportunity to be a counselor! I just finished my second year at The University of Oregon where I am a journalism and advertising major. I had my own kids summer camp when I was in high school and I can’t wait to work at a summer camp again. I love hiking, swimming, animals, and sleeping under the stars. Camp is one of my favorite places on earth and I can’t wait to be back so soon and meet all of you!
Hi! My name is Meghan Belanger and this will be my first year at Bar 717 Ranch! I am very excited about this opportunity. I grew up in Sheboygan Wisconsin where I spent my summers swimming in Lake Michigan. I am currently living in Georgia finishing up my Masters Degree in Higher Education at Valdosta State University. I currently oversee the university’s outdoor program. At camp this summer I am looking forward to helping with the backpacking trips as well as the ropes course! I am really passionate about outdoor education and excited to continue to do what I love!
Yo! My name is Reilly and this will be my second year at Bar717 as a summer camp counselor. I’m from Sacramento, California but I go to school in Los Angeles at Occidental College. I am a religious studies major with an emphasis in Buddhism and I like to do lots of things there but my most favorite are leading Meditation Club and performing with my band around campus! Fun Fact: I’m a triplet! See if you can guess which one is me in my baby photo. I also love to garden and am involved with my school’s on campus gardening club. I am an Eagle Scout so I spent much of my childhood in the Boy Scouts going to different summer camps as well as all kinds of camping and hiking. I really love every wilderness area I’ve been to in California and I’m excited to see what Bar717 has in store this year!! I really look forward to meeting everyone, hope we can have some awesome jam sessions under the trees!
Hello! My name is Sam and this will be my first summer on the Ranch. I am currently studying fine art at the California Institute of the Arts, in Southern California where I am from. I work in a woodshop and spend most of my time making my art there. I love building and I am so excited to be able to do that at camp with all of you. Hiking, exploring and being outdoors has always been an extremely important part of my life. I can’t wait to run around all summer! See you soon!
Shwmai! My name is Sinead and I am from Wales in the UK. I was a counsellor back in 2015 and since then I have graduated from Cardiff University. You can usually find me out walking my dog, riding through the countryside or travelling somewhere in the world. This year, the ranch will be the first stop on my around the world trip. After which I will be returning to the UK to start my masters degree. I can’t wait to spend another summer with the horses; I’m sure it will be a great one!
Yo! My name is Kira, and I am ecstatic to get to spend a second summer at camp! I go to Scripps College, where I am majoring in Economics, History, and minoring in Spanish. Aside from academics, I work for the Outdoor Wilderness Leaders, hike with the outdoor club, and hang out with my pals (most of whom are also camp counselors!). I love the outdoors, and am so happy I get to revel in it all summer with an amazing group of campers, counselors, and staff at the most beautiful place on Earth. I’m also so so pumped to find dead things for the Curiosity Shop, go on Exploration Adventures, make tons of friendship bracelets, sing lots of songs, and discover cool nature + science stuff with campers all summer! Cannot wait to be there, see y’all soon!
Hey everyone, my name is Sam, I’m from a large town called Nuneaton just outside Birmingham in the UK but I’m currently living in Nottingham where I study Genetics at the University of Nottingham. I had a really active childhood, my dad was always dragging me off into the mountains for weeks at a time and getting me involved in cross country and swimming. I’m spending my time doing a lot of things at the moment; I’m studying a lot, I’m heavily involved in the swimming and mountaineering clubs at university and I have a job where I work for the University working with kids from less privileged backgrounds to educate them about higher education. Anyway, this will be my third time working as a councillor at camp and I’m really looking forward to it. Camp is such a beautiful place and I’m excited to see you all there!
Hi all, my name is Matt. I am from a small town near Sacramento, California and have long awaited the opportunity to be a counsler at the Bar 717! Growing up my summers revolved around camp, in fact, camp has been a part of my family for three generations and there was nothing I looked forward to more. I am an avid scuba diver and grew up swimming, playing water polo and working as a lifeguard. Currently I am attending Santa Clara University with a major in Economics, but spent the last year living and working in San Francisco at a mobile marketing start up. I am looking forward to lending a hand in the wood shop, archery range, eating snacks on the way up from the swimming hole, and wherever else I am needed. My favorite memories as a camper were platform nights and overnights so expect some exciting activities and locations! I’m looking forward to meeting you all!
Hi! I grew up in San Jose. For the last two years I have been studying geology at Humboldt state. This last year I have been practicing several different kinds of woodworking. I’ve been studying how to become a first rate Longbow maker! This also means that I practice archery fairly often. For the last six or seven years I have been volunteering as a camp counselor at Walden West outdoor camp. Several years ago I was also living in Maryland while teaching children how to sail and race small sailboats. This last summer I was happy to work as a blacksmithing and archery teacher at an outdoor school in Los Gatos California. I am very excited to be working with everyone at Bar 717 in the blacksmithing, archery, and ropes course areas!
Hi, my name’s Chloe! I’m from Redding, California where I fell in love with summer camps as both a camper and a counselor. Growing up, most of my time was spent in a ballet studio, but I volunteered my summers at Whiskeytown Environmental School programs, such as Shasta Youth Leadership and Outdoor Adventure Camp. It was there that I really developed an appreciation for nature and love of the outdoors. I am currently finishing my freshman year at University of Southern California, but I will be studying in Rio de Janeiro, Hong Kong, and Milan for the entirety of my sophomore, junior, and potentially senior years. Between my classes here in Los Angeles, I work part-time as an English literacy tutor for several kindergarten, first, and second graders at an inner-city school. I came to Bar 717 three years ago for another program called Camp Royal, but this will be my first year as a counselor at Camp Trinity. As much as I’ve enjoyed living in the city and preparing to travel around the world, I am beyond excited to spend my summer with you all at the ranch!
Hey everyone! My name is Katharine and this will be my fourth summer as a counselor after being a camper for eight years. Originally from Portland, Oregon, I am currently finishing up my senior year at Arizona State University where I study psychology and family and human development. I spent of my life playing sports (primarily soccer and lacrosse) and therefore I love being active as much as possible. Being a camper on the Bar 717 Ranch is what caused my love for the outdoors to grow and I cannot wait to spend another summer at camp with everyone. See you this summer!
Hey y’all, my name is Emily and I am from Portland Oregon. I am beyond thrilled to be coming back to the Ranch this summer for my third year as a counselor. After finishing a session of supporting 6th graders, mentoring high school students, and fostering a relationship between science and nature in the wilds of the Mt. Hood I am very much looking forward to sharing days at the river with all of you. Over the winter I spend my time working as a para-educator at a school for students with behavioral and social needs, as well as developing a mountain education program for 5th graders. There’s nothing quite like seeing a ten-year-old sink into snow for the first time. In the rare moments I’m not in the woods I knit on front porches, walk until I find a new coffee shop (which isn’t hard in Portland), play board games that involve a lot of yelling, and make plans with my team for making the young women we work with into confident leaders and change-makers. I can’t wait to be back on the avenue crafting up a storm or falling asleep under stars. Counting down the days my friends, I’ll see you there!
Hi all! My name is Sam. This will be my first year at the Ranch and I couldn’t be more excited to join the family. I just graduated from the University of Washington in my grey home town of Seattle with a degree in Environmental Studies. After a couple month stint backpacking around Europe, I’m back and eager to explore the Shasta-Trinity wilderness with the Trinity campers. I used to run my church’s childcare center and love working with kids of all ages! I can’t wait to disconnect from the modern world and spend the summer in nature with an amazing group of people.
Hi! I’m Nick and this’ll be my first year as a counselor at Bar 717! I’m from New York City and I go to school at Vassar College in New York, where I study Environmental Studies and play on the rugby team. I spent this past semester studying in Tanzania, which was an absolutely incredible experience. When I’m not bumbling around making a fool of myself in broken Swahili, I’m usually scouring the city for the best pizza I can find and hiking along the east coast. I spent last summer working as an environmental educator for a park in Manhattan, where I taught kids about the Hudson River’s ecology. I’m real excited to spend this summer in beautiful nature surrounded by great people. See ya there!
Hi! My name is Lauren. This will be my first summer working at the Bar 717 Ranch. I spend my falls and springs working outside of Portland Oregon, teaching sixth graders about the natural world around them and mentoring high school students to be leaders and educators. During the winter I am finishing my undergrad at Portland State, with a degree in childhood development. In my free time you can find me getting lost and hammocking in a forest. I am so excited to meet all of you this summer!
Hi everyone! My name is Georgia and I am so excited to be returning to the Bar 717 Ranch this summer. I was a camper for around eight years, but this will be my first as a counselor. I’m from the East Bay in California, but I now live in Boulder, Colorado where I am studying Environmental Studies and Philosophy at the University of Colorado Boulder. Camp introduced me to backpacking when I was twelve years old and fostered my love for the outdoors, and I have since focused my studies on sustainability, conservation and environmental education. Last summer I spent a month backpacking in the North Cascades of Washington with the National Outdoor Leadership School, and continued to develop my leadership skills, Wilderness First Aid, and Leave No Trace principles. I have spent a lot of time with different animals, from donkeys and chickens at home- to volunteering on a working rehabilitation ranch for farm animals in Oregon last March- and I’m looking forward to spending more time with all the animals that make up our camp community. I can’t wait to meet you all this summer and help everyone explore all that camp has to offer- see you under the apple trees!!
Hi my name is Laina and so excited to be spending my summer at camp, this will be my second year as a counselor. I lived at camp for a few years with my family as caretakers of the ranch. Some of my fondest memories are from my time spent playing and working at camp. I spent my childhood on a farm in the mountains of Trinity County, as a kid my family always had a milk cow, goats, horses and chickens. I spent most of my time playing in the river, milking cows and riding horses on our farm. Being around animals has always been a great source of joy for me. I am looking forward to spending the summer taking care of small animals and sharing my love of animals with the campers. These days I’m living on a farm in the small town of Oak Run and attending the local community college, where I am getting my degree in business.
Some of my other passions include hiking and travel, because of that I spent last winter in Spain hiking the El Camino, a 700 km trail across the North of Spain. While in Spain I also attended two weeks of Spanish and toured the Mediterranean coast. I have also done quite a bit of hiking in the local national and state parks. I can’t wait to spend a summer playing in the river, taking care of animals and hiking with the campers.
Hi there everyone! I’m David and this is my third year in a row as camp counsellor. I’m a third year psychology student all the way from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. But I’ve been coming here for the past few summers and it’s like a second home! I’m so excited to come back, make tie dye, climb Gates, and engage in all the amazing activities and moments that camp has to offer! Can’t wait to see you all there!
Hi there! My name is Kait Schultz and I am thrilled to be joining the Bar 717 family! I am from the Cowboy Capital of the World, Oakdale, California. I started riding horses when I was 7 years old and I haven’t stopped since! Until starting college, I showed in Reining and Ranch Riding and traveled all over the country to do so! I am a rising third year at UC Berkeley, where I am majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies and minoring in Italian Studies. I am an avid writer and aspiring novelist. I love writing about adventure, horses, and lots of sci-fi! When I’m not riding or writing, I can be found hiking, skiing, gardening, or kayaking. I am so excited to be a part of the barn staff and meet all of you soon!
Hey there! My name is Joe and I’m from Los Angeles. I currently go to Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY, where I study filmmaking and captain the men’s rugby team. I love the arts and getting active, even more when I get to do both at the same time! This will be my second year as a counselor at the 717 but my seventh (eighth, maybe?) summer at camp. After a few years away mentoring kids at various programs and day camps, I am so excited to be back living it up at the ranch! See you soon!
Hi everyone, my name is Nathan and I am super excited to say that this will be my second year back at the Bar 717 as a counsellor. I come from a rural city called Albury in New South Wales, Australia. I’ve spent the last 5 years of my life here, studying environmental management at Charles Sturt University which I graduated from in 2015, and have spent the last two years enjoying the wild surroundings of the city. I’ve spent much of the last year getting involved in rock climbing but I’ve made sure to throw in more than a few camping/hiking trips in that time. I’ve also been working at my local Laser Tag where I facilitate birthday parties for kids (and adults) so I’ve gained a lot of experience in leading groups and working with all kinds of people. I am an experienced hiker, kayaker, rock climbing, mountain biker, white water rafter, four wheel driver, and all round adventurer and I’m hoping to apply those skills in the study of Adventure Ecotourism and Outdoor Education when I return to Australia next year. The Bar 717 has proven to be an excellent experience builder for this and I’m hoping this year will be just as incredible as the last one. Can’t wait to see you all there!
Hey Y’all my name is Daniel and I am so excited to be returning as a second year counselor at camp. Last summer was my first year at camp and I fell in love with the ranch so I am very excited to be returning. A little bit about me is I was born in southern California but shortly after moved to Alabama for most of my childhood where I spent a lot of time outside chasing fireflies and exploring the woods behind where we lived. When my family moved back to California we moved to a desert town called Riverside, where I spent a lot of times outdoors riding dirt bikes and camping. I am currently finishing of a BA at Chico state in Kinesiology with dual pathways in both physical education and health and wellness. In my spare time I still love to camp, ride dirt bikes, fish, and anything else that gets me outside. Look forward to seeing all familiar and new faces this summer.
Hi everyone! My name is Tessa, and this will be my second summer on the Ranch as a counselor (after around 11 summers before that as a kid), and I can’t begin to explain how excited I am to be back. I’m currently finishing up my junior year at Bowdoin College in Maine, where I study Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s studies, along with some Sociology on the side. I’m from Los Angeles, so living in Maine and getting real seasons and outdoor time has been wonderful. In my time outside of classes, I’m the president of one of our housing systems on campus, and I work with some very cool second graders at the neighborhood elementary school. They have so many dance moves and teach me new ones every day–I’m definitely a lucky chick. I’m so excited to bake bread, swim in the river, and make more projects with all of you this summer in the Craft Shop! See you soon!
